Biographie
Born in France
with origins from Cape Verde and Italy, the multidisciplinary artist
Raphaël Moreira Goncalves is on a quest to explore paths to other
dimensions. Through sculptures, films, and various images related to
contemporary technologies, his work explores the connections between
the physical and the mental, adding narrative nuances derived from
personal experiences, dreams, and virtual worlds; while emphasizing the
mystical dimension of technology. A graduate of Le Fresnoy and the Fine
Arts of Lyon, his works have been exhibited internationally, including
at the Thaddaeus Ropac Pantin Gallery in Paris, the ClearView Gallery
in London, and most recently at the Refraction Festival during Miami
Art Week 2022.

"There is something coming from
another galaxy in the practice of the multidisciplinary artist Raphaël
Moreira Gonçalves. And this is not only due to the crazy aesthetic of
his work, but rather to the juxtaposition game between the dimensions
that would allow to communicate with other universes. Through augmented
reality sculptures, videos and experiences in virtual reality, video
games and computer graphics, he proposes creations that bridge the gap
between the real and the fictional, while emphasizing the spiritual and
mystical dimension of virtual. "For me the virtual is close to a mental
and energetic space that can be revealed in the physical world". A
vision that echoes brane cosmology, a theory where all dimensional
stratas are so close to each other that we would not be able to
differentiate them. And this proximity could partly be the basis of the
ambiguity of our relationship to the virtual and whose return to
equilibrium would be made only during the passage in the afterlife.
Obviously this is only myth and speculation, but this cosmic legend 2.0
is one of the major ingredients of the narrative that paces the
universe imagined by Raphaël."

"Il y a quelque chose venant d’une
autre galaxie dans la pratique de l’artiste multidisciplinaire Raphaël
Moreira Gonçalves. Et ce n’est pas seulement dû à l’esthétique barrée
de son travail, mais plutôt au jeu de juxtaposition entre les
dimensions qui éventuellement, permettrait de communiquer avec les
autres univers. Par le biais de sculptures en réalité augmentée, vidéos
et expériences en réalité virtuelle, jeux vidéo et images de synthèse,
il propose des créations qui font pont entre le réel et le fictif, tout
en mettant l’emphase sur la dimension spirituelle et mystique du
virtuel. “Pour moi le virtuel se rapproche d’un espace mental et
énergétique qui peut se dévoiler dans le monde physique”. Une vision
qui fait écho à la cosmologie branaire, une théorie selon laquelle
toutes les strates dimensionnelles seraient si proches entre elles,
qu’on ne serait pas capable de les différencier. Et cette proximité
pourrait en partie être à la base de l’ambiguïté de notre relation au
virtuel et dont le retour à l’équilibre se ferait uniquement lors du
passage dans l’au-delà. Bien évidemment ceci n’est que mythe et
spéculation, mais cette légende cosmique 2.0 constitue l’un des
ingrédients majeurs de la trame narrative qui rythme l’univers imaginé
par Raphaël."
